Dawn's Early Light

Dawn's early light set the trees ablaze with color this morning.  These photos were taken atop a hill on the north side of Rochester.  In the photo below, the sun is just catching the tops of the trees in the valley.  Some of the taller buildings in downtown Rochester are visible in the distance.

Even the understory trees still in the shadows glow in their autumn colors.
As the day progressed, the colors ripened
The past couple of days and the next couple of days have been/will be unseasonably warm.  Today the high was 87 F (~ 30C)!  I was hoping that the warmth would help the monarch butterfly chrysalis on our trellis mature, but that was not the case.  I checked on it this afternoon when I got home from work and it was pretty obvious that the 2 nights with frost had killed it.  The exterior was cracked and the interior was basically rotten goop.  :-(  I did see a fresh monarch butterfly flitting around this afternoon, so it seems that some individuals fared better than ours did.  We are treasuring these golden days and counting on memories of them to get us through the upcoming winter.
